Indigenous Environmental Teaching - Outdoors Workshops

We lead outdoor subjects for all ages on a wide range of subjects. Frequently, these look like guided hikes through various areas in southern Manitoba, from the Swan Lake valley, Spruce Woods, Morden Hills, and much more. Subjects we cover include everything to do with traditional Ojibwe environmental knowledge, including on how to read the environment through looking at water quality, water movement, plant health, soil texture and smell, land use history, Ojibwe history, and the Ojibwe environmental perspective. We are available to teach these and much more.

Indigenous Environmental Teaching - Indoor Workshops

While traditional Ojibwe knowledge typically is taught outdoors, there are many stories about the environment and its processes that lend themselves to indoor settings. Subjects we are available to teach include: the dynamic between squirrel and oak trees, ants and their roll in forest dynamics, the unique personality of our local bird species, issues the environment is facing from an Ojibwe perspective, Ojibwe history, and much more. See our blog for some of these subjects and more.

Teacher and School Assistance

We are frequently told that traditional Indigenous knowledge resources are extremely limited for classes. We have partnered with many schools in the southern Manitoba area in providing workshops for teachers and students alike, aiding school divisions in approaching issues like Truth and Reconciliation, land recognitions, Indigenous relations and more. Likewise, our Land-Based Mind Map has provided teachers with materials for incorporating Indigenous subjects, and we provide assistance in using this resource effectively.

Land Audits

Knowing the ecosystems in your area is a valuable asset for any environmentally-minded landowner in understanding their property better. In our work, we frequently map plant and animal species using traditional Ojibwe knowledge to understand the dynamics of the ecosystem they live in. Likewise, using this traditional knowledge, we can provide landowners with a better understanding of the edible and usable plants in their area and how to maintain them.

Public Outreach

We are frequently asked to speak on a wide range of subjects at schools and events. Subjects we are available to speak about at any event include: Indigenous history, history of Canada's Indian Policy, traditional environmental knowledge, Truth and Reconciliation, environmental issues our area faces from an Ojibwe perspective, and more. Please contact us for more information or to request us to speak about these or other subjects.
