Training Options

We offer training experiences running 1-5 days in length.

Our available seasons are May, June, September, and October, with winter subjects available outside those months.

See below for what we will cover.

Professional Training

Are you an environmental group or organization interested in a hands-on traditional knowledge experience? Join us in Swan Lake First Nation, where we provide training in land-based Ojibwe knowledge, training you in skills for reading the environment from an entirely different perspective.

Through the interactions of plants, behavior of birds, roles of insects, shapes of clouds, colors of flowers, smells of soils, and more, gain the ability to walk into an ecosystem and truly connect with what nature is doing.

Life in Water - Reading Water Quality

Learn about aquatic insects, water temperature and color, soil smells, local animal activity, surrounding plant behavior, and traditional management techniques tied to each factor.

Beyond Dirt - Understanding Soils

From the Ojibwe perspective, soil is far more than chemical composition - it is alive. Learn about how water, trees, insects, and fungi interact in soil layers.

Animal Behaviors and Indicator Species

A wide range of insects, plants, bird, animals, and more were once used by traditional Ojibwe people to read the environment they lived in. While many of these signals have changed due to climate change, their behavior has never been more relevant.

Landscapes and Weather - Changing Topography and Climate Change

In a changing climate, many parts of nature are directly impacted. Learn the influence each species has on influencing the climate, from the grand Oak tree to the smallest insect.

Plant Personalities and the Communities They Create

From old growth forests to burnt ecosystems, plants work together closely, forming tight-knit communities that battle for space in the foliage.

Traditional Management Techniques

The Ojibwe managed their landscapes like gardens. Using fire, creating plant communities, introducing species, or managing populations, they kept their food sources healthy and abundant.
